It can not be stressed enough that it is important to dress to impress when you go into an audition in Columbus. You should wear something that is comfortable, however you should be wearing something that also can hint at the character you are portraying without being on the extreme side of things. Coming to an audition completely in make up for a Disney style fairy queen; will not get you extra points with the casting director. You may even be a huge distraction at that point with your gossamer wings swaying everywhere.
Though costume attire is strongly discouraged; if your character is more a business professional feel free to embody that with some corporate attire. Though also avoid tight or revealing clothing; so to maintain professionalism. Avoid high heels, more than likely and much to your embarrassment you may be asked to remove them. A flat footed shoe is more recommended and can help the casting director even get a true judge of your height as well.
Jewelry is a great way to accessorize an outfit. Don’t wear jewelry though that will have you jangling around like a belly dancer on steroids. The goal is to make a good first impression however you should never be a distraction to others during your chance to audition. If you are a hat person, sorry to break it to you; but that hat will put your face in shadow and you certainly wouldn’t want to have the casting director squinting at you to see your facial features. Don’t wear white either, as this can give you a washed out appearance on set and you will just end up looking like a ghost in front of the camera.
It’s always good to talk to other professionals in your network. Trends change, style changes but the key is to always appear professional and polite. If you receive a call back, it is actually recommended that you wear the same clothing that you did for your audition. I know it seems strange but it will help the casting director recognize you from the audition and you can always wear something of similar style instead of the exact same thing. Though it could be a stretch, anything that can help give you an edge is worth your time when stepping into the competitive arena of acting in Columbus.
